Michael Lambert -
Vision 2030: A Democratic, Equitable, & Vibrant San Francisco for Everyone

• City Librarian, San Francisco Public Library

San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) is one of the premier urban libraries in North America. A nationally recognized leader in the industry, SFPL recently developed a new strategic plan to achieve greater customer focus in centering community needs. Traditional library services are being bolstered by new strategic priorities to celebrate the culture and diversity of the community, while fostering shared experiences to bring our residents together in a way only possible through the most egalitarian of institutions.
SFPL is on the vanguard of taking more entrepreneurial approaches to service delivery with organizational shifts to proactively connect with our patrons while infusing the spirit of San Francisco into library programs and services. As the highest rated department of municipal government, the library is a model for effective stewardship of the community’s resources, delivering strong return on investment.
City Librarian Michael Lambert, the first Asian American to lead the institution, will share how SFPL is being intentional in the organization’s evolution of mission and vision in order to help residents, attain their goals for a brighter future and live their best lives.

Ghazali Mohamed Fadzil -

The history of library development in Malaysia reflects the commitments, impacts and outcomes that the library community has created in helping the nation to continuously develop. This journey started in the 1800s when the first library was established. This was further strengthened with the appointment of the first librarian at the Kuala Lumpur Book Club in 1922. This was followed by the establishment of an association of librarians in Malaysia and Singapore, the Malayan Library Group (MLG), on 6 June 1955 in Singapore. Each milestone signified the importance of professional librarianship in Malaysia. The MLG eventually became the Librarians Association of Malaysia and the Library Association of Singapore. The MLG was responsible for the birth and development of the library profession in Malaysia, through the Memorandum on Public Library Services for the Federation of Malaya (1956) that laid the foundation for a nationwide library system. The Blueprint for Public Library Development in 1968, with the proposal for the formation of a National Library Board. Consequently, the National Library of Malaysia (Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia) was established under the National Library Act 1972, cementing a central role in policy, coordination, and resource development. Subsequent to these, the association also proposed the Blueprint for School Library Development in 1979, followed by the academic and special libraries. The peak of this development is the push for the development of library schools and curricula that led to the formation of the School of Library Science at the University of Technology Mara (UiTM, then ITM). Currently, there are about 13,000 libraries in Malaysia.
